How to use WikiDub
Contributing to the WikiDub knowledge community
Thank you for your interest in contributing to the WikiDub knowledge community.
To start contributing is simple:
- Create an account: Click Create account in the top right and register your details. (You can skip this if you want, but it is very helpful if your contributions are linked to your user account)
- Contribute to an existing page: Find a page you want to contribute to, click Edit and away you go. Once saved your edits become available for the the whole community. Edits and instantaneous, but the site retains a history of edits to prevent accidental or malicious changes.
- Add a new page to the knowledge base: If you can't find the page you want to contribute to then chances are it doesn't exist yet. Brilliant! You can create a new page by inserting a new link in an existing page. Say you are an expert on alarm systems... simply find a link on the main page where you think it should sit, follow through to where you think alarms should be mentioned and edit that page to put in a link to Alarm systems. This automatically creates a blank page called Alarm systems and to edit it just click the link.
- See a gap in the knowledge base and think it should be filled?: Here's where things get really interesting! Lets say that you are writing your Alarm systems article and you think there should be some info on Canbus but you just don't know how it works. Just create a link to Canbus in your article and the blank page will be created. You don;t have to write anything in it and can just leave it there if you want, but better yet you could invite someone to contribute or wait until somebody else hits it that has something to add.
Be bold, go ahead!"
The number one rule of wiki editing is to be bold. Go ahead - make changes. Other people can correct any mistakes you make, so have confidence, and give it a try! There are all kinds of editing conventions, rules, and philosophies for the editing of wiki pages, but the be bold rule is the most important of these!
An edit can contribute whole new paragraphs or pages of information, or it can be as simple as fixing a typo or a spelling mistake. In general, try to add or edit text so that it is clear and concise. Most importantly, make sure you are always aiming to do something which improves the contents of the wiki.
When you need to use some type of formatting, such as for new headings or bolding of text, you do this using wiki syntax or the buttons in the edit toolbar above the editing zone. See Help:Formatting for some of the common types of formatting used.
